In 2015, after barely two years practising the sport, Tia-Clair Toomey stunned the CrossFit world (and herself) by taking 2nd place in her rookie year at the 2015 CrossFit Games. Proving it was no one-off, the former track athlete went on to repeat her success with a second place in the 2016 Games, officially earning herself the title of two-time ‘Second fittest woman on earth’.

51-year-old ultra-runner and multi-day stage race specialist, Carolin Botterill, wasn’t always into running. It wasn’t until she was 36, and a mum of three, that she began the journey which would ultimately lead to her becoming an ultra-runner – accidentally – via a bid to get fit and lose weight. At first she walked, then she ran, and just kept running. Now, 17 years later, Carolin has completed some of the toughest multi-day ultras on the planet, taking her from the Arctic Circle to the Peruvian jungle.

She’s pretty awesome on bike and foot too, cycling 1300km around Iceland, and training for her upcoming running challenge to run the 190km-long, jagged mountain ridge of Corsica’s GR20.

Last weekend, Pro cyclist and sprint specialist, Jolien D’hoore, took the Belgium National Road Race title, adding four-time national road race champion to her cycling CV. Today, on the opening day of the Giro Rosa, Jolien will line up with her Wiggle High5 team mates to take on the Team Time Trial, so it seems fitting to share the chat I had with the 27-year-old ‘Belgian Bullet’ earlier this month.
I grabbed five minutes with Jolien a few hours ahead of her stage win on the final day of the OVO Women’s Tour in London.
